Sketchpad LessonLink Terms of Use

What All Subscribers Should Know:

  • Introduction: Sketchpad LessonLink offers users of The Geometer’s Sketchpad® access to a vast collection of mathematics activities to use with students from grades 3 through 12. To use SLL, teachers and students must first have access to Sketchpad, as the Sketchpad software is not included with a subscription to Sketchpad LessonLink. Both individual teachers and schools can subscribe to SLL to access and use Sketchpad activities with students.
  • Key Online Accounts: A subscriber who does not have a pre-existing Key Online account will establish a free Key Online account during registration for SLL. This account will be a password-protected account with a teacher’s email address as login ID. A Key Online account enables access to SLL and to other free and subscription services offered by Key Curriculum Press. Key will send Key Online account holders at most three email bulletins per semester about the Key Online services, including SLL, related professional development opportunities, and important update information regarding Sketchpad and SLL.
  • Preview: Teachers can preview SLL for 30 days via their Key Online account. Sketchpad LessonLink preview is for the express purpose of evaluating SLL for individual use or for school adoption. It may not be used on an ongoing basis beyond the trial in place of purchasing an individual or a school site subscription. SLL preview subscribers will have access to a limited set of activities for a 30-day period. Only one preview account is allowed per user. At then end of the 30-day subscription term for the preview, all user preview data will be purged from the system.
  • Subscription Term: Access to Sketchpad LessonLink is based on an annual subscription term, typically on a school-year–to–school-year basis.
  • Renewal: At the end of each subscription term, individual subscribers and School Subscription Leaders need to renew their subscriptions to continue access to SLL. To enjoy uninterrupted access to Sketchpad LessonLink, renew before the end of the subscription term. After renewal following a subscription lapse, individual subscribers and registered teachers at subscribed schools will find their folders and preferences intact but will have to update their ClassPasses and other folder information.
  • Data Collection: Sketchpad LessonLink collects no data from students. Sketchpad LessonLink does collect and store data on teacher subscribers to use for system administration and improvement and that data is saved after the expiration of a subscription. Key and its SLL partners reserve the right to access the stored information for the administration and improvement of SLL. Subscribers should not use SLL to store confidential information.
  • Privacy Concerns: Your My Share Settings lets you choose whether to share information about yourself with other subscribers on the Sketchpad LessonLink network. Sharing can facilitate collaboration. If you choose to share with other subscribers, by default, your name, school, city, ZIP or postal code, and your country will be shared with other subscribers. If you choose not to share, these will not be shared. You can optionally choose to make more information available about yourself. When logged into SLL, visit the Share Preferences section to learn more.
  • Functionality: Key reserves the right to revise the functionality of the SLL application and the SLL Terms of Use. Subscription fees are subject to change at the end of a subscription term.
  • System Requirements: Each School Subscription Leader, individual subscriber, and preview subscriber agrees to evaluate independently the technical aspects of SLL by accessing http://www.keypress.com/x22357.xml, which lists the general system requirements for access. SLL is dependent on ever-changing technology that varies from computer to computer—computer hardware, operating systems, Web browsers, and Internet connectivity hardware and software. Key Curriculum Press (Key) does not guarantee access from all computers or with all browsers. SLL’s performance varies with the speed of individual computers and the speed of the web connectivity. Key makes no warranties as to SLL’s performance or its compatibility with the computer hardware, networking software, or connectivity software. Key makes reasonable efforts to maintain and enhance SLL. School Subscription Leaders and individual subscribers agree to accept and use the technology “as is.”
  • Liability Release: Subscribed schools, individual subscribers, and preview subscribers agree to release Key from liability for technical, operational, and other problems that arise in the course of using SLL.
  • Copyrights: The activities and their associated data are copyrighted material protected under international copyright conventions and federal law. Key gives subscribers and participating students permission to print Overviews, Student Worksheets, Activity Notes, and Sketch Tip Sheets from the subscribed SLL libraries, to view Sketch Tip Videos, and to download Sketchpad sketches to personal and school computers, but only for their personal and professional use. Except for the specific permissions granted under these Terms of Use, Key does not grant permission to distribute text, videos, or sketches to others either in electronic or printed form in violation of copyright law.
  • Activity Comments: Key Curriculum Press will review and respond to the activity comments posted in SLL by subscribers in order to help clarify issues and make suggestions for activity use. Key will revise SLL activities from time to time, making some comments inapplicable. Key reserves the right to delete comments that Key’s editors feel are inappropriate, confusing to other SLL users, or obsolete based on changes made to activities.
  • Feedback: Key is interested in suggestions and feedback regarding the SLL application and the activities in SLL libraries, but cannot promise to make specific changes to solve individual or school problems. Users should bring problems that arise in the course of using SLL to Key’s attention via the Feedback link at the top of the SLL page or through either the Customer Support Request form (http://keyonline.keypress.com/public/inquiry) or the Technical Support Request form (http://keyonline.keypress.com/public/tech_problem).
  • Cancellations: If an individual subscriber or subscribed school is not satisfied with the subscription for any reason, the individual subscriber or School Subscription Leader may cancel access to SLL within 30 days of the subscription term start date and will receive a refund for the unused months of the subscription.
  • Verification: An individual or school’s subscription and adherence to the Terms of Use may be subject to further verification by Key. Such verification may occur prior to the issuance of a subscription number by Key, or subsequently during the course of the subscription term.
  • Revocation: Failure to comply with these Sketchpad LessonLink Terms of Use may result in Key canceling an SLL subscription or revoking SLL access for a school, its teachers, and its students.

What School Subscription Leaders Should Know:

  • Overview: In order to use Sketchpad LessonLink via a school site subscription, a school must designate one site-based staff member as “School Subscription Leader” (such as the mathematics department head, an assistant principal, the school technology coordinator, or a lead teacher designated by a school administrator). The School Subscription Leader subscribes to SLL access at Key Online on behalf of the school (https://keyonline.keypress.com/sll/registration), agrees to serve as the Key contact for subscription administration during the subscription term, and agrees to serve as the school’s administrator for its SLL subscription.
  • School Policies: It is the responsibility of the School Subscription Leader to determine whether SLL meets the needs of a school’s teachers and students and whether the Terms of Use are consistent with school policies. If the Terms of Use are not consistent with school policies, a school should not subscribe to SLL.
  • Number of Teachers: A school site subscription enables a school to purchase access to SLL for varying numbers of teachers. Key’s school site subscription packages have been configured to ensure that each school that purchases a subscription gets the maximum number of seats for their subscription dollar. The School Subscription Leader is responsible for determining how many subscription seats to purchase for their school and to whom at the school site those are allocated.
  • Subscription Agreements: At the time of subscribing, a School Subscription Leader must certify:
      1. that he or she has the authority of the school administration to subscribe the school to SLL;
      2. that the school will utilize SLL under these Terms of Use;
      3. that the school agrees to bind its teachers and school personnel to these Terms of Use, advising school staff regarding adherence to them—perhaps at an appropriate staff meeting; and
      4.  that he or she will instruct registered teachers to give each participating student a copy of the SLL Student Use Guidelines and/or discuss these guidelines when they give their students a ClassPass.
  • Subscription Term: The School Subscription Leader determines the start and end dates of their school’s subscription term. In order to ensure uninterrupted access to SLL by teachers and students during a school year, the year subscription term should include the full school year.
  • Subscription Number and Teacher Access: When a school purchases a school site subscription to SLL they become a subscribed school and the School Subscription Leader will receive a “subscription number” via email. (This number will also be visible in the School Subscription Leader’s management console.). Key will only issue a school subscription number directly to a School Subscription Leader. The subscription number permits the School Subscription Leader to register teachers and/or enables individual teachers to register themselves for access to SLL. The School Subscription Leader should provide this number to teachers, preferably by email, so that they can register for SLL.
  • Subscription Number Duration: The subscription number is valid for the duration of the subscription term. To continue access to SLL past the subscription term, the School Subscription Leader must re-enable teacher registration by renewing the school site subscription.
  • Subscription Number Usage: The subscription number is for the exclusive use of the School Subscription Leader and registered teachers at the subscribed school. The School Subscription Leader and registered teachers agree:
    1. not to post the subscription number on the Web or publicly in any other way (such as in classrooms or in a school bulletin available outside the school),
    2. not to distribute the school subscription number to teachers or persons not intended to occupy seats in the subscription,
    3. not to post Key Online or SLL usernames and passwords on the Web or publicly in any other way (such as in classrooms or in a school bulletin available outside the school),
    4. not to distribute Key Online or SLL usernames and passwords to others on or off the school site, and
    5. to report repeated misuse of SLL access privileges to Key.
  • School Subscription Leader Priveleges: The School Subscription Leader can view all of the school’s registered teacher accounts and cancel teacher access to the school’s subscription. The School Subscription Leader can also view and clear ClassPasses to prevent student access to SLL activities if the need arises. Key is not liable for any actions taken by the School Subscription Leader against a school’s teacher accounts. Administering teacher accounts is the responsibility of the School Subscription Leader.
  • Student Use Guidelines: If a school has a student policy describing the appropriate use of school technology and the consequences for misuse, Key requests that the school’s student policy include the appropriate use of SLL and adherence to the SLL Student Use Guidelines found on the SLL login page at www.keymath.com/sll among the school technologies covered, if it is not automatically covered by virtue of the school’s subscription to SLL.
  • Problems and Misuse: The School Subscription Leader agrees to be the “problem solver” for registered teachers at the school site. The School Subscription Leader should report problems and misuse of SLL access privileges to the appropriate school administrator. The School Subscription Leader should report problems and misuse of SLL access privileges to Key by using the Customer Support Request form (http://keyonline.keypress.com/public/inquiry). Key will make all reasonable efforts to assist the School Subscription Leader with problems that may arise.

What Teachers at Subscribed Schools Should Know:

  • Access: A teacher can register for SLL access only if the school has an active subscription to SLL (except through an individual subscription). It is the responsibility of the School Subscription Leader to determine how school site subscription seats get distributed among teachers at a subscribed school.
  • Registering as a Teacher: Teachers at subscribed schools agree to the Sketchpad LessonLink Terms of Use and register for access to SLL at Key Online (https://keyonline.keypress.com/sll/registration) using the subscription number issued to the School Subscription Leader. A teacher who has completed the registration process is a “registered teacher” in SLL.
  • Privacy: Teacher names and email addresses will not be sold or shared with other companies or organizations by Key Curriculum Press. Registered teachers in SLL may voluntarily choose to share their names, school affiliation, email addresses, and other professional information with other SLL users via SLL’s sharing features.

What Individual Subscribers Should Know:

  • Overview: Individuals can subscribe to SLL without going through their school by purchasing an individual subscription at Key Online (https://keyonline.keypress.com/sll/registration) and agreeing to the Sketchpad LessonLink Terms of Use.
  • Affiliation: Individuals may choose to affiliate themselves for identification purposes with a K–12 school or college, company, government, or other organization—or with no school or organization.
  • Privacy: Individual names and email addresses will not be sold or shared with other companies or organizations by Key Curriculum Press. Registered teachers in SLL may voluntarily choose to share their names, affiliations, email addresses, and other professional information with other SLL users via SLL’s sharing features.

What Everyone Who Works with Students and ClassPasses Should Know:

  • Creating ClassPasses and Student Web Pages: Within the SLL application, registered teachers at subscribed schools and individual subscribers can create a unique ClassPass code for each of their folders to share its Sketchpad activities with their students. The ClassPass will also be used to generate a direct-access URL for an SLL Student Web Page.
  • Issuing ClassPasses and SLL Student Web Page URLs: An SLL subscriber may issue a ClassPass or an SLL Student Web Page URL that gives access to SLL Student Web Pages only to students enrolled in their classes. Students enrolled in a class covered by a ClassPass are “participating students.” Student access gained through this subscription is exclusively for the educational use of participating students and for the use of those assisting them in their studies. A participating student may share their ClassPass and access to assigned activities and materials with a teacher, parent, guardian, mentor, tutor, or other person personally assisting them in their mathematics studies, but only for the purposes of such assistance.
  • Student Access: To access activities, participating students go to www.keymath.com and input their ClassPass or go directly to the SLL Student Web Page via the URL provided by their teacher.
  • Student Web Page Header: The name of the class, the name of the teacher, and other class identifying information appear in the online header of the SLL Student Web Page each time it is displayed to students. This helps ensure that students are logged into the right set of activities and alerts unauthorized viewers that they are accessing a class site not intended for their use.
  • ClassPass Posting and Distribution: Teachers may post ClassPass codes and SLL Student Web Page URLs in their classrooms and on class Web sites visible to their students, but must not make the ClassPass codes or SLL Student Web Page URLs accessible to the general public. ClassPasses made available for public access on the Web will be subject to cancellation by Key.
  • ClassPass Dates: When an activity folder is “published” by an SLL subscriber for student access, each ClassPass enables student access to an SLL Student Web Page between the class dates specified by the SLL. The class dates must fall within the subscription term. After the end of the active period, or if an activity folder is “unpublished” by the subscriber, the ClassPass no longer allows access to SLL. Following subscription renewal by the school, teachers must renew their accounts and update their class dates for each folder to reactivate their ClassPasses. Since ClassPasses must be unique across all schools using Key Online services, Key cannot guarantee that a particular ClassPass will be available to a particular Key Online subscriber or that a ClassPass used one year will be available to the same user the next year.
  • Class Usage: A registered teacher or subscribed individual may use SLL in class on school computers or with a computer display device like a data projector. Key urges teachers with projection capabilities in their classrooms to demonstrate to students the use and the features of the SLL Student Web Pages. A registered teacher or subscribed individual may also assign SLL as lab activities or homework by publishing those activities to an SLL Student Web Page.
  • Student Use Guidelines: Along with each ClassPass, registered teachers and subscribed individuals agree to distribute or discuss the SLL Student Use Guidelines (enumerated below). The Student Use Guidelines can be downloaded in PDF format as part of the complete Terms of Use during the registration process. They are also enumerated for students at www.keymath.com/sll. Teachers agree to distribute the Student Use Guidelines with ClassPasses and to use reasonable efforts with their students to enforce them.
  • Misuse: If the Student Use Guidelines have been seriously compromised by a student or students, a subscribed individual, registered teacher, or School Subscription Leader should clear the ClassPass for the compromised class. They can then assign a new ClassPass for that class. Teachers should report repeated misuse of the SLL access privileges to their School Subscription Leader and/or seek assistance from Key via the Feedback link at the top of the SLL page.
  • Revocation: Key reserves the right to revoke an individual ClassPass and/or access to SLL given under the terms of an individual or school subscription if these Terms of Use are not respected by the school, its individual teachers, or its students.

Sketchpad LessonLink Student Use Guidelines

  • Your school has elected to obtain a site license to The Geometer’s Sketchpad® Dynamic Geometry® software, also called Sketchpad™ software, and subscribe to Sketchpad LessonLink™ (SLL), a collection of activities that use Sketchpad software. This license and subscription is offered by Key Curriculum Press (Key).
  • Welcome to SLL! Your teacher will point you to specific activities relevant to your course. To access SLL, you will need an Internet connection and a Web browser. You can access SLL by entering the ClassPass issued to you by your teacher at www.keymath.com, Key’s SLL site for students and parents, or using the SLL Student Web Page URL provided by your teacher. You can access SLL from school, from home, or from another location.
  • Your ClassPass will work only when your teacher enables it to work. With it, you have access to Sketchpad LessonLink activities that your teacher has chosen to complement your coursework.
  • Key Curriculum Press cannot promise that access will always work perfectly, or that it will work on all computers. If your ClassPass does not work, check that your computer has the system requirements needed for access. You can find those system requirements at www.keypress.com/sll/requirements. Discuss any access problems with your teacher.
  • Your ClassPass and the access that it gives you is exclusively for use by you and the other students enrolled in your class—and by teachers, parents, guardians, mentors, tutors, or others who are assisting you and your classmates with your mathematics studies. While you may not share your ClassPass with students not in your class, you may share your ClassPass with a person who is personally helping you learn mathematics and who, for that reason, may need to look at the SLL Student Web Pages created by your teacher.
  • Specifically, under the SLL Terms of Use agreed to by your school,
    1. You are permitted to share your ClassPass with other students in your own class (for students with multiple classes, this would be students in the same mathematics class and period only), and also with a person helping you learn mathematics and who might need to look at your SLL Student Web Pages for that purpose.
    2. You are not permitted to give your ClassPass to other students who are not enrolled in your class (unless the student is personally assisting you in your study of mathematics).
    3. You are permitted by Key to print SLL materials to which your teacher has granted you access for your own use in completing SLL activities.

4. Beyond the permission granted above, you are not permitted to copy the SLL Sketchpad sketches, Student Worksheets, Sketch Tip Sheets, Sketch Tip Videos from the Web to your personal computer, and you are not permitted to email or otherwise distribute SLL materials in electronic or printed form to others in violation of copyright law.
